The bed, and what it does

Why reformer costs more than mat

Why is reformer more expensive than mat Pilates?

Because the beds are expensive and they cap how many people can be in the room. A mat class can take thirty women with no equipment at all. A reformer class can only take as many as there are beds, and each one is a serious piece of engineering that needs servicing.

What sits behind the price

The beds
A studio-grade reformer is a significant purchase, and a studio needs one each rather than one in total.
The cap on numbers
This is the big one. However popular a class is, it can’t take more women than there are beds, so the cost can’t be spread more thinly.
Space
Each bed needs room around it for the carriage to travel and for us to move. Reformer studios take up far more floor per person than a hall.
Training and upkeep
Reformer teacher training is longer and more specialised than mat training, and the beds need servicing.

What you get for it

A small room means we can actually see you, correct you, and change your springs halfway through an exercise. In a class of thirty on mats, that isn’t possible however good the teacher is.

Whether it’s worth the difference depends on what you want. If you’re confident and happy getting on with it yourself, a mat class is excellent value. If you’d rather be taught, the smaller room is the thing you’re paying for.

What it costs here

A first class is £15. If you carry on, passes bring it down to £17 a class on a 12-class pass.

Common questions

Is it worth the money?

It depends what you’re after. You’re paying for a small class, specialised equipment and someone teaching you. If you’d rather train alone or in a big room, other options give you more per session.

Should I just buy my own reformer?

It’s a big outlay, and without anyone watching it’s hard to know whether you’re doing the movements well. Most women are better off in classes first.
