What should I wear to a reformer class?

Something close-fitting you can move in, and grip socks. Skip anything loose or baggy, and avoid zips, buckles or hard buttons that could catch on the carriage. Most of all, wear something you feel comfortable in.

Closefitting

The short answer

Leggings or fitted shorts
Whatever you’d wear to the gym is fine. Fitted rather than loose, so we can see how you’re moving.
A fitted top
A baggy t-shirt will end up over your head the moment you lie down and lift your hips. Ask us how we know.
Grip socks
Needed for every class. The carriage and foot-bar are slippery in bare feet or ordinary socks.
Nothing hard or sharp
Zips, buckles and studs scratch the carriage, and they dig into you when you lie back on it.

Wear whatfeels likeyou

There’s no dress code here and nobody is looking at your kit. Close-fitting does genuinely help us see your alignment, which is most of what we’re watching for. But if you feel self-conscious in tight clothes, wear whatever lets you think about the class instead of about yourself. That matters more.

A few small things

Tie long hair back, because you’ll be lying down for a good chunk of it. Rings and long necklaces are worth leaving off, as they catch on the straps. Bring water.

You don’t need gloves, wrist supports or anything else. We’ve got the rest.

Common questions

Can I wear normal socks?

Not for this, no. Ordinary socks slide on the carriage and the foot-bar, which isn’t safe. Grip socks have rubber on the sole.

Can I go barefoot?

We ask everyone to wear grip socks instead, partly for grip and partly for hygiene on shared equipment.

Do I need special Pilates clothing?

Not at all. Ordinary gym kit is perfectly fine, and there’s nothing you need to buy beyond grip socks.
