What happens in your first class

What actually happens in a first reformer class?

You arrive ten minutes early, we say hello and set your bed up together. Then it’s 50 minutes: a gentle warm-up lying on the carriage, footwork against the foot-bar, arm and leg work with the straps, some work through your middle, and a stretch at the end.

Fiftyminutes

How the hour goes

Classes are planned rather than made up on the spot, so this is roughly what you can expect.

  1. Ten minutes before

You arrive, we say hello and check how you’re feeling today. Shoes off, grip socks on.

  2. The first five minutes

Lying on the carriage, breathing, finding your starting position. Nothing strenuous at all. This is where we set your springs.

  3. The next fifteen

Footwork against the foot-bar, pushing the carriage away and controlling it back. It’s the backbone of the class, and it’s where you’ll first feel what the springs do.

  4. The middle twenty

Arm and leg work with the straps, and some work through your middle. We change the springs between exercises and show you how.

  5. The last ten

Slower work and stretching, still on the bed. Then we tidy the equipment away and off you go.

We’ll talk youthrough it

You’ll have someone guiding you from the first movement to the last, so there’s nothing to work out on your own. Everyone else is wrapped up in their own carriage, and you’ll be wrapped up in yours.

We won’t ask you to demonstrate anything or single you out. Just follow along, and ask whenever you’d like to.

What to expect at your first reformer class
Your first class. Unhurried, and explained as we go.

If you lose track

You will at some point, and it honestly doesn’t matter. We talk through every movement while it’s happening, so you can follow along by ear as much as by eye. If you fall behind, just stop, watch for one repetition, and join back in.

Common questions

How early should I get there?

Ten minutes. It gives us time to say hello and show you the bed, so you’re not walking straight into the room feeling rushed.

Will I be the only beginner?

Almost certainly not. Foundations is a beginner class, so most of the room is in exactly the same boat.

What if I can’t do one of the exercises?

Tell us and we’ll give you a different version. There’s always another way, and taking it is completely normal.
